Descriptions
Procedural animation for humans in Unreal Engine 5, In this course, you will learn how to create a fully procedural walk and run animation system for characters entirely within Unreal Engine 5.1+. The system gives you complete control over every aspect of a character’s movement, including manual control of every bone through custom logic and variables inside Control Rig, while maintaining strong performance that supports many characters simultaneously. By using procedural animation, characters can adapt naturally to their environment, whether walking, running, standing on uneven surfaces, stepping across obstacles, moving on ramps, or reacting to complex gameplay situations. Instead of creating hundreds or thousands of traditional animation variations and complex blending systems, you will learn how to build intelligent movement behavior that automatically responds to environmental conditions and character state.
The course focuses on understanding the logic behind realistic movement, including foot placement, stride timing, speed adaptation, pelvis and spine motion, limb synchronization, IK systems, movement prediction, dynamic cycle timing, and environmental interaction. After completing the system, which is included as a downloadable reference project, you can adapt it to virtually any type of character such as humans, robots, mechs, monsters, or entirely custom creatures by adjusting a small number of parameters instead of creating new animation sets. Since the techniques do not depend on major built-in engine functions, the same procedural animation concepts can be applied to swimming systems, weapon recoil, climbing mechanics, parkour systems, and many other gameplay features. Everything created in the course runs through a single animation blueprint node, allowing seamless blending with traditional animations and other character poses.
What you’ll learn
- The fundamentals of procedural animation
- How to create a fully procedural walk and run cycle
- How to analyse and incrementally improve your animations
- How to create custom functionality within control rig
- How to control every element of your animation through logic and variables
- How to use IK for realistic foot placement
- How to predict player footsteps based on the environment
- How to seamlessly blend between different angles of movement
- How to create a dynamic cycle-time that adapts to different speeds
- How to create a natural and smooth human animation system
- How to create a system which can be modified for various styles of character movement
Who this course is for
- Game developers wanting to create a robust system to save 100s of hours hand-animating walk cycles
- Animators who want to prototype and visualise different animation styles rapidly
- Unreal Engine developers who want their characters to interact with the environment

Requirements
- No experience with animations or control rig necessary. Familiarity with Unreal Engine will help but all steps are demonstrated and explained.
- An understanding of vectors/rotations would help follow the core concepts that are demonstrated
- This is an advanced topic and may be difficult to follow if you are not familiar with Blueprints
