Description
Digital Electronics: The Gateway to VLSI & Embedded Systems. This course provides a comprehensive foundation in digital electronics and digital systems design to enter the world of VLSI and embedded systems. This course provides a comprehensive foundation in digital electronics and digital systems design, covering theoretical concepts and practical implementation techniques. Students begin with an understanding of analog and digital signals, logic levels, and number systems including decimal, binary, octal, and hexadecimal. It also covers various methods of converting number systems and binary arithmetic operations, along with representing signed numbers using 1’s complement and 2’s complement techniques. Students then study logic gates, Boolean algebra, Demregan’s theorem, and logic simplification methods using SOP, POS, Karnaugh Maps, and the Quinn-McCluskey technique. This course focuses on the design and implementation of combinational circuits such as adders, subtractors, multiplexers, demultiplexers, decoders, encoders, and comparators. The sequential logic design section analyzes latches, flip-flops, shift registers, and synchronous and asynchronous counters. Advanced topics include finite state machine (FSM) design with Moore and Mealy models, sequence detector design, and state minimization techniques. This course also introduces programmable logic devices such as PLA, PAL, CPLD, and FPGA architectures, enabling the implementation of digital systems optimized for VLSI applications, embedded systems, and FPGA-based applications. This course is an excellent prerequisite for advanced courses such as microprocessors, microcontrollers, Verilog HDL, and VHDL.
